Potential, why we suppress it in ourselves.

[tweetmeme source=”your_twitter_name” only_single=flase http://www.URL.com]

I watched the movie coach carter and really enjoyed it.  It is about a basketball team that is not going anywhere and a new coach that makes them undefeated.  The team is not doing good academically so the coach benches the entire team until they get their grades up.  This is a quote from the movie, but edited to the original text.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -Nelson Mandela; from Coach Carter at 1:47 min

What this quote meant to me.

  • This is not completely about fear, but it is about non performance based on fear.
  • Its about living down instead of living up.
  • Its about not doing your full potential because of others watching you.

A few questions…

  • Have you ever acted dumber than you are to fit in?
  • Have you ever reduced your abilities or yourself so that you did not stand out?
  • Have you ever accepted the mediocre life instead of living who you really are?
  • Who in your life is making you afraid to perform? (job, friends, family, general population)
  • Why are you concerned with what other people think?
  • What is your true potential and what small, little, tiny step can you take today to create it.

The end

This is one of my all-time favorite quotes….it was especially a favorite in my first couple years of college (it’s by Nelson Mandela..in case you wanted the source). 🙂 I haven’t seen this movie, but have been meaning to. Have you ever watched Stand and Deliver? It’s another great movie about rising to your potential…an oldie but a goodie 🙂

    He also said this:

“There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. “
